Story

This coffee comes from the Kerinci highlands of Sumatra and is produced through the ALKO cooperative, founded in 2014 to support smallholder coffee farmers across the region.

ALKO brings together more than 400 farmers and focuses on transparency, sustainability and fair pricing. Through the use of blockchain traceability technology, the cooperative can track every coffee lot from farm to export while helping protect the nearby Kerinci Seblat National Park, home to the critically endangered Sumatran tiger.

Women play a key role in the cooperative’s operations, managing processing, training and education programmes for farmers. Together these initiatives strengthen both the quality of the coffee and the resilience of the farming communities that produce it.

Process

Fully Washed

  • Ripe cherries pulped after harvest
  • Fermentation in water tanks for up to 100 hours
  • Thorough washing to remove mucilage
  • Slow drying for around 20 days
  • Milling, grading and sorting

The extended fermentation and careful drying help create a balanced cup with herbal, woody and spicy notes.

Sustainability & Packaging

The ALKO cooperative works with more than 400 farmers in the Kerinci region of Sumatra, close to the island’s largest national park. The cooperative uses blockchain traceability to track coffee from farm to export, ensuring transparency throughout the supply chain while helping prevent agricultural expansion into protected forest areas.

By improving traceability and guaranteeing fair prices for farmers, ALKO supports both environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods within the coffee-growing communities surrounding the park.
